Springs Monitoring Program

The TWDB initiated the springs monitoring program in 2020 in conjunction with the groundwater quality sampling program. The purpose of the springs monitoring program is to monitor and inventory a consistent network of springs across the state on an annual basis. Historically the TWDB has sampled springs on a case-by-case basis with discharge data rarely collected. The goals of the program are to implement data collection, inventory, and analysis on the springs of Texas and to monitor short and long-term changes in flow rate and water quality. TWDB staff will collect samples for analysis of standard TWDB water quality parameters and, in some cases, isotopes. Staff will also measure flow rates and record other observations to estimate the amount of water flowing from the aquifer and to verify the source of the water. These activities are expected to provide:

  • An improved understanding of the conditions of the aquifers that produce springs and a better picture of overall aquifer health, and
  • Insights into groundwater-surface water interactions that can be incorporated into regional water planning and groundwater availability modeling.

The following criteria are used when evaluating a new spring location to include in the monitoring network:

  • Springs located in aquifers that are experiencing local or regional water table declines
  • Springs that are not included in a routine monitoring program
  • Ease of access and consent from respective landowners and stakeholders
  • Areas with cultural significance, and
  • Locations with threatened/endangered species or other ecosystem considerations.

2020 Springs Monitoring Program Locations and Flow Rates. The spring locations displayed in this map are listed below.

The current monitoring network locations are listed below. These springs were sampled in 2020:

TWDB staff are researching additional locations to expand the springs network. The number of springs in the network depends on current program funding, staffing capabilities, and cooperation from the public and other stakeholders. Please contact Rebecca Storms at 512-475-3302 if you have any questions or information on spring locations that may be considered for this program.
