Core Testing and Numerical Well Simulations for Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer
Project Summary:
The objective is to locate, describe, and test core rock properties for the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) aquifers. In general, the TWDB is interested in descriptions and photographs of the cores, as well as testing of core samples for porosity, permeability, cementation exponent (m-factor), and magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, the TWDB is interested in simulating well logs for a geographical distribution of key wells to correlate well log responses to formation properties derived from core and nearby well logs, allowing the TWDB to approximate formation properties in wells where limited information on formation properties is available.

Dr. Torres-Verdín was the principal investigator of the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer numerical well simulations and core analysis study completed in 2021. This presentation overviews the methods and computer algorithms developed by the Joint Industry Research Consortium on Formation Evaluation at The University of Texas at Austin to numerically simulate well logs under a wide range of borehole environmental conditions and loggings instruments. It is shown that the numerical simulation of well logs can be used to estimate aquifer properties with minimal influence from drilling, borehole, and instrument-footprint effects, including gamma-ray, neutron-density, resistivity, and spontaneous potential logs. Examples of application are described for several wells and their borehole measurements acquired in the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer.
